Background on Indian Chinese Cuisine

Dalchini, pronounced “Dal-Chee-nee”, serves Indian style Chinese fusion cuisine. Simply put, we serve the type of Chinese food you would typically find in India.

What‘s the difference?

Our cuisine combines Chinese cooking techniques with Indian heritage. The Pepper Chilli Paneer encapsulates this cultural blend using Indian ingredients, in this case Paneer, as the basis of the dish while being tossed in a wok with Chinese seasoning. You will find that our food contains more fresh coriander, ginger, garlic and chilli than traditional Chinese dishes which creates a depth of flavour and intensity that we hope you will love as much as we do.

Staying true to our heritage, we serve a wide variety of vegetarian dishes as a large proportion of the Indian population are vegetarian. You will also notice that we do not have beef or pork on the menu reflecting the fact that most of the Indian population are either Hindu or Muslim and therefore do not eat these meats.

Our Origins

The origins of our cuisine can be traced back to the late 18th Century in Kolkata, India, when a group of Hakka Chinese people settled in an area which has now become Kolkata’s China Town. This Hakka group created Chinese eateries and began to adapt the cuisine to Indian taste buds. This style of fusion cooking soon caught on and spread to other areas of India. As the cuisine evolved, new dishes were created that simply cannot be found in China. Our Spicy Chicken Lollipops are a prime example of this.

Our History

Dalchini opened in 2000, bringing authentic fusion cooking to Indians living in London who missed this style of food. However, just as the cuisine of the Chinese eateries in Kolkata spread throughout India, our food soon caught on among the people of London and now it is a pleasure to see Londoners of all nationalities enjoying our cuisine on any given night.

Holiday Closure: Dalchini will be closed from the 3rd-24th of August 2015
